Paycheck Protection Program Loans

Publisher: US Small Business Administration Start Date: 2020 End Date: 2020 Record Count: 5,156,850

Collection: Government Spending
Description: On December 1, 2020 the Small Business Administration was ordered by the court to release more detailed data on loans made through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), a major facet of the 2020 CARES Act to provide stimulus funding during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This detailed release came after the SBA initially refused to publish any database, then released only partial data on the largest loan recipients. The full database now contains all recipient names, addresses, and exact loan amounts. The full PPP data was downloaded from the SBA Box website on December 1, 2020. Each record represents a loan made from a commercial lending bank to a small business and backed by the federal government. The full data set contains all original variables and new variables added with minimally, consistently, and confidently normalized character strings. These normalized strings are those searched from the Accountability database. Data was processed using R software and is documented on the Accountability Project GitHub repository.
